Ten years of ONEONESIX—can you believe it? To mark the occasion, we’re launching our first-ever merch, created in collaboration with local visual artist Josh Kiwikiwi. ONEONESIX is a shape-shifting space: a theatre, a community hall, a place to feast, a corporate events venue, a comedy club, an intimate music bar, a cinema, and more… The design draws inspiration from the magic and wonder of balloons, live performance and people.

In true ONEONESIX style, this project has only been possible thanks to our community. A huge mihi to Supacolour, who generously sponsored the printing of our first merch run.

Here’s what Josh had to say about the inspiration behind the design:

“When I first approached this design, I knew it needed to be instantly recognisable. The name ONEONESIX already has a certain mystique—it’s one of those ‘if you know, you know’ kind of places. Unless you’ve been there, driven past, or are part of the arts community in Whangārei, you might not even know what ONEONESIX is. But for those who do, it holds real meaning.

As a portrait artist, I naturally asked myself: what is the face of ONEONESIX? The answer was clear—the building itself. It’s iconic. Over the past decade, this space has hosted and supported some of the most incredible work in theatre, music, dance, and every kind of event imaginable. While it’s the people inside who create the magic, the building is what people see—it’s a landmark for anyone who drives by every day.

With that in mind, I wanted the design to work on a T-shirt, a tote bag, an art print—anything. It had to be simple, yet detailed enough to trigger an immediate response: ‘Oh yeah, I know that building.’ It also needed to feel playful and imaginative.

It was an absolute honour to create this design for ONEONESIX. I can’t wait to see it out in the world—on shirts, on bags, on walls—where it belongs.”
